Rooted in Ballistic Rubber: The Cumberland Rubber Supply Story

Rooted in Ballistic Rubber: The Cumberland Rubber Supply Story

Cumberland Rubber Supply is anchored in ballistic rubber, with roots in large-format, high-impact rubber parts. Our involvement in shooting ranges grew from that materials background and from relationships with the people who build, operate, and maintain training facilities.

Today, we bring together ballistic rubber and shooting range components, custom development capabilities, and specialized industry resources. Rubber remains our foundation. Our complementary products reflect the practical needs customers bring to us.

From High-Impact Rubber Parts to Shooting Ranges

CRS began with substantial rubber components: blocks, panels, sheets, and specialized shapes for demanding applications. Interest from Navy customers helped draw us further into shooting range applications, where durability, maintenance demands, and interrupted training matter alongside purchase price.

That experience shaped our priorities: selecting suitable materials and developing parts with useful service life in mind. Our goal is to help customers manage replacement work and downtime. Results depend on the product, installation, ammunition, shot distribution, operating conditions, and maintenance; government purchases do not imply government endorsement.

Our high-impact industrial rubber applications remain important. The same attention to material consistency and application requirements carries into our range products.

The Development Behind the Finished Rubber Part

Our role goes beyond locating an off-the-shelf item. Depending on the project, CRS contributes to material sourcing, part design, mold development, specialized cutting, and production coordination. We also work with independent manufacturing partners to produce parts to specified material and design requirements.

This development work connects a customer’s application with a producible part. Our custom rubber parts capabilities provide a starting point for discussing geometry, material characteristics, quantities, and processing options.

Ballistic Rubber Remains Our Foundation

Different range assemblies call for different formats. Explore our core product families:

Rubber can serve an important impact-facing and ricochet-mitigation role within a properly designed range system. Projectile capture is a separate consideration that depends on the complete assembly and operating conditions. Rubber does not replace appropriately designed containment, inspection, or maintenance.

Why We Also Supply Steel and Ballistic Fiberglass

Steel Backing for Range Assemblies

Our involvement with rubber naturally led to supplying AR500 steel and other steel sheet options. Steel backing is part of many ballistic rubber assemblies, and customers often need both materials for the same project. Rubber and steel perform different roles. Grade selection alone does not establish suitability: backing, connections, angles, ammunition, and the complete range design require qualified evaluation.

Protective Applications Beyond the Firing Lane

We also supply ballistic fiberglass panels for projects such as protected reception areas, offices, and other locations with specified ballistic-resistance requirements. Selection must address the required threat level and complete construction, including joints, openings, and supports.

For sound-treatment needs, Ambush Acoustics is a Cumberland Rubber Supply product line. Acoustic treatment and ballistic protection address different requirements.

STAPP Target Retrievers: Extending Our Range Relationships

Range customers bring us questions about target handling, equipment support, and installation flexibility as well as rubber. Those conversations helped lead to our relationship with STAPP and our offering of shooting range target retrievers.

Our approach is component-focused. Customers can obtain equipment through CRS without being required to purchase a bundled CRS service contract. We support owner-managed projects and collaboration with customers’ chosen installers. Installation must follow manufacturer requirements and use appropriately qualified personnel; equipment configuration, support, and warranty terms are confirmed for each project.

Rubber Materials for Customer-Built Targets

Some customers need finished targets; others want material to fabricate their own. CRS offers sheets and panels for application-specific rubber target projects. Our rubber targets resource page connects customers with material options and explains how to ask about partner companies making finished targets with our rubber.

Target design, mounting, ammunition, distance, wear, and surrounding containment all matter. Material selection should be part of that broader review, not treated as an unrestricted safety rating.

Clear Ballistics Gelatin and Rubber-and-Gel Packages

Through our relationship with Clear Ballistics, we also offer ballistic gelatin for customers observing penetration and conducting controlled demonstrations or experiments.

Ask about packages combining rubber products and gelatin for your project. The materials serve different purposes: gelatin is test media, not a backstop. Live-fire evaluations require appropriate containment and qualified supervision. Package contents and suitability are confirmed during quoting.

Experience, Documentation, and Practical Resources

Our project gallery shows application examples, while The Roots of Ballistic Rubber provides background on the material.

For test-specific observations, see our customer ballistic rubber testing summary. Results apply to the documented specimens and conditions, not every installation. Our granulated rubber media questions and answers offers additional application and maintenance context.

Specialized Expertise. An Open Approach.

Our involvement in shooting ranges has built an extensive network of relationships with range builders, designers, equipment manufacturers, and specialized service providers.

We welcome collaboration with a customer’s existing team. When additional expertise is needed, we can recommend companies whose capabilities fit the project—whether or not CRS supplies every component. Customers remain free to choose the people and services that suit their needs.

Our goal is to be a useful resource: supplying specialized rubber products and complementary equipment while helping customers connect with the right people to move their projects forward.
